The Institute for International Scientific Exchanges in Medical Sciences (IISEMS)
As of 2009 an annual meeting takes place in the campus of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, Tel-Aviv University. This meeting is targeted to faculty members of the Dept. of Ophthalmology at Sackler but practically is open for all ophthalmologists in the country.
Since these annual meetings began numerous world renown experts in several sub-specialties of ophthalmology were invited to Israel and presented highly professional talks and discussions.
Also a yearly winner for the award for “Outstanding Achievement in Ophthalmology” is elected. All candidates are faculty members of Ophthalmology Dept. of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.

Recent Activities
- The 11th annual meeting of the IISEMS took place on February 8th, 2019. The guest speakers were Prof. Friedrich Kruse (Cornea, Germany), Prof. Stanislau Rizzo (Retina, Italy), and Prof. Bita Esmaeli (Oculoplastics, USA). We also had the honor to host Prof. Uthoff at the meeting.
- The winner for the 2019 Award for “Outstanding Achievement in Ophthalmology” was Dr. Alon Skaat from Sheba Medical Center. He received the 2000 USD prize at the 2019 meeting, and presented a lecture based on his research.
- The 2000 USD are dedicated for travel support to an international meeting.
- The Institute supported The 2019 Stein Update Seminar and sponsored the guest speaker, Prof. Jerzy Nawrocki (Retina, Poland). The meeting took place on April 17th, 2019
- The 12th annual meeting of IISEMS took place on February 14th, 2020. This year we hosted world specialists practicing Glaucoma and Corneal Diseases. The meeting included three renown guests: in alphabetical order Prof. Jorge Alió (from Spain), Prof. James Brand (from the US) and Prof. Jost Jonas (from Germany) each presenting a rather brief talk followed by an interactive debate narrated by Israeli experts (Dr. Shimon Kurtz, Glaucoma, Ichilov and Dr. Eitan Livny, Cornea, Rabin) and involving the audience.
- The winner for the 2020 Award for “Outstanding Achievement in Ophthalmology” was Dr. Yoav Nahum from Rabin Medical Center. He received the 2000 USD prize at the 2020 meeting, and presented a lecture based on his research.
- The 2000 USD are dedicated for travel support to an international meeting.
- The 13th annual meeting of the IISEMS took place on February 12h, 2021. Due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the meeting was broadcasted via the ZOOM platform and involved speakers from 3 continents. The guest speakers were Prof. Uday Devgan (Cataract, California), Prof. Susanna Park (Retina, California) and Dr. Daniel Uthoff (research, Germany). Although challenging, the debates and discussions involving the audience and the entire panel were vivid and interesting. The debates and discussions were moderated by Dr. Ori Mahler, Prof. Elad Moisseiev and Prof. Dan Gaton. The entire recordings of the meeting are attached here by.
- The winner for the 2021 Award for “Outstanding Achievement in Ophthalmology” was Dr. Dinah Zur from Ichilov Medical Center. She received the 2000 USD prize at the 2021 meeting, and presented a lecture based on her research.
- The 14th annual meeting of the IISEMS took place on February 11th, 2022. Due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the meeting was broadcasted via the ZOOM platform again and involved three speakers from the USA.
The guest speakers were Prof. Hilda Capo (Pediatric Ophthalmology, Miami, Florida), Prof. Deepinder Dhaliwal (Refractive Surgery, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania) and Prof. Ken Nischal (Pediatric Ophthalmology, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania ).
Although challenging, the debates and discussions involving the audience and the entire panel were vivid and interesting.
The debates and discussions were moderated by Prof. Irit Barequet, Prof. Ori Spierer and Prof. Dan Gaton.

- She received the 2000 USD prize at the 2022 meeting, and presented a lecture based on her research.
The 2000 USD are dedicated for travel support to an international meeting. - The 15th annual meeting of the IISEMS took place on February 10th, 2023, as a frontal meeting, for the first time since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and involved three speakers from the USA and the UK.

The guest speakers were Prof. Vivek Patel (Neuro-Ophthalmology, Irvine, California, USA), Prof. Prem Subramanian (Neuro-Ophthalmology, Colorado, USA) and Prof. Daniel Ezra (Oculoplastic Surgeon, London, UK)
The debates and discussions involving the audience and the entire panel were vivid and interesting.
