About the Institute
The Stanley Steyer Institute for Cancer Epidemiology and Research at Tel Aviv University has a rich and storied history.
Established with the support of the Steyer family, the institute was inaugurated to advance research and understanding in the field of cancer epidemiology.
In 1994, the institute was inaugurated in a ceremony attended by members of the Steyer family.
This event was accompanied by a conference held in honor of Prof. Baruch Modan, who served as the founding head of the Stanley Steyer Institute for Cancer Epidemiology and Research during its early years.
Two years later, in 1996, leadership of the institute transitioned to Prof. Manfred Green.
Prof. Green, who also headed the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at Tel Aviv University, brought a wealth of experience and expertise to further develop the institute's research initiatives and academic contributions.
Prof. Daniel Cohen served as the head of the institute from 2009 to 2018, concurrently holding the position of head of the School of Public Health from 2011 to 2017.
He was succeeded by Prof. Yariv Gerber, who led the institute from 2018 until 2024, also serving as head of the School of Public Health during this time.
In 2024, Prof. Liat Lerner, the current head of the School of Public Health at Tel Aviv University, assumed leadership of the institute. She brings new perspectives and expertise to guide the institute forward in its mission to advance impactful research and education in cancer epidemiology.
