Dr. Regev Schweiger Awarded Alon Fellowship
Dr. Regev Schweiger has been awarded the prestigious Alon Fellowship, which supports the recruitment of outstanding early-career researchers to Israeli universities.
Dr. Regev Schweiger, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Human Genetics and Computational Medicine at the Gray Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, with a secondary appointment at the Blavatnik School of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at Tel Aviv University, has been awarded the Alon Fellowship by Israel's Council for Higher Education.
The Alon Fellowship is awarded to outstanding early-career researchers and is designed to support Israeli universities in recruiting exceptional faculty members and providing them with the resources to establish independent, innovative research programs.
Dr. Schweiger completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science at Tel Aviv University and subsequently conducted postdoctoral research in the Department of Genetics at the University of Cambridge under the supervision of Prof. Richard Durbin, supported by an EMBO Fellowship.
His research focuses on computational genetics and population genetics, with the goal of uncovering the processes that shape human genetic variation—from our evolutionary history to the molecular mechanisms that generate differences between individuals and influence genetic disease, cancer, fertility, and other biological processes.
To achieve this, his laboratory develops theory and algorithms that combine classical population genetics models with advanced machine learning methods, alongside the analysis of data generated using cutting-edge sequencing technologies. This integrated approach aims to deepen our understanding of human evolution, population history, and human health.
In addition to his academic work, Dr. Schweiger serves as Principal Scientist at MyHeritage.
