Abstract:
The brain’s ability to process and learn from sensory information is modulated by an animal’s behavioral state but the underlying cellular mechanisms are not well understood. In the cortex, layer 1 (L1) is a key site for integrating sensory-driven and behavioral state-dependent inputs from distal areas of the brain but it remains unclear how different types of neurons in L1 – most of them subtypes of GABAergic interneurons (INs) – control information processing and plasticity in lower cortical layers. In my talk I will discuss our recent experiments in which we analyzed the role of genetically-defined L1 INs in the state-dependent control over sensory processing in cortical circuits. I will discuss the results of these studies and propose an inhibition-/disinhibition-based cellular mechanism to explain how the state-dependent activation of L1 INs adapts the stimulus-evoked responses of principal excitatory neuron across all cortical layers to an animal's behavioral demands and how this may enable state-dependent learning.
