Dr. Noam Shomrom joined Tel Aviv University’s Faculty of Medicine as a lecturer and Principal Investigator (PI) in October 2008. Prior to this appointment he was a Post-Doctorate Affiliate at MIT, Cambridge, MA. During his training at MIT he combined high-throughput methods with computational analysis. 


In the past few years, he has looked for ways to broaden his managerial and leadership skills beyond scientific activities and achievements. In this capacity he gives scientific lectures about the marvel of the human genome to broad-background crowds; he took several managerial courses at MIT's Sloan School of management; he participated in MIT's artificial intelligence initiatives; he was involved in founding BioAbroad, a non-profit organization encompassing Israeli bio-related academics overseas (currently there are >1000 members); he also initiated RGI-Israel (Rare Genomics Institute; in collaboration with RGI-USA) assisting patients with rare genetic diseases.



Genomics and Gene Regulation by Small RNAs

Our laboratory focuses on the analysis of regulation of gene expression aimed at understanding human disease. Combining high-throughput methods and bioinformatics, one aspect of our team’s research explores microRNA regulation in order to reach a global, systems perspective of the mechanistic roles microRNAs play during disease development. Among our projects:

  • Identification of a microRNA molecule that controls several oncogenes. Their discovery is paving the way for a potentially revolutionary drug for cancer treatment.
  • Revealing the influence of microRNAs on pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine, thus leading to tailored drugs for cancer treatment.
  • Exposing pathogens in human tissues based on deep sequencing of small RNA molecules followed by subtraction and assembly of the various genomes.
