Prof. Anat Loewenstein was elected to the Ophthalmologist Hall of Fame

"There are ophthalmologists and scientists whose impact on the field will last beyond their lifetimes." The Ophthalmologist Power List Hall of Fame launched on August 4, 2023 with the inauguration of their first ten irrefutable giants of ophthalmology.

Prof. Loewenstein was chosen for her extraordinary contribution to the development of ophthalmology in Israel, changing treatment methods and her groundbreaking leadership.

 

Prof. Loewenstein mainly researches macular diseases which cause loss of central vision and impair visual acuity. The studies are in three main tracks:

 

1. Identifying the disease as early as possible, especially its active phase so that we can treat the disease before irreversible damage is caused.
2. Retinal toxicity study of new drugs proposed to treat diseases.
3. Studying the effectiveness of new treatments.
 

 

Prof. Loewenstein is an ophthalmologist specializing in vitreous and retinal diseases. She graduated from medical school at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

 

After completing a master's degree in ophthalmology at Tel Aviv University with honors, she completed two years of training at the Wilmer Institute, Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, USA where she specialized in vitreous and retinal diseases, including drug and surgical treatment.

 

In 1993 she joined the clinical faculty of the Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University and since 2007 she is a full professor. Since 2012, the Sydney Chair has been entrusted with A. Fox Ophthalmology.

 

She works as a retinal and vitreous specialist at the Tel Aviv Medical Center. Since 2000, she has served as director of the ophthalmology department at the Tel Aviv Medical Center.

 

Prof. Anat Loewenstein serves as Vice Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University.
