Should Exosome Secretion Be Prioritized Alongside Histamine and Other Mediators?

In Prof. Ronit Sagi-Eisenberg's laboratory, researchers have uncovered how mast cells, pivotal in the innate immune system and central to allergy processes and inflammation, make critical determinations.

Should Exosome Secretion Be Prioritized Alongside Histamine and Other Mediators?

This paper demonstrates that through their interaction with the autophagic system, i.e. fusion with amphisomes, mast cell secretory granules, that release soluble mediators, such as histamine, and mediate mast cell functions in innate and adaptive immunity, acquire the capacity to additionally release exosomes, thereby mediating mast cell communication with their cellular neighbourhood. We also show that the secretory granules dynamically switch between these two states by fusion and fission events that are regulated by their lipid composition.
