Evacuation and emergency exits
Building evacuation strategies are a critical element in high rise building, caused by fire or chemical spillage
Emergency procedure
You may need to evacuate if a natural disaster occurs, if a fire exists, if toxic fumes are present in the building. What is most important, no matter the reason, is to remain calm.
Evacuation procedures
- Learn locations of exit routes, exit stairwells and areas of refuge in any buildings you routinely use
- Learn in advance the needs of anyone for whom you are responsible that may need assistance during an emergency
- Know emergency phone numbers and keep them posted
- Remain calm
- Do not use elevators
- Proceed safely down the stairs using the handrails
- Exit the building using the nearest safe exit and proceed to refuge area/assembly area
