Curriculum

The main orthodontic treatment philosophies taught are:

  • Modified Edgewise Technique
  • Straight Wire Technique (conventional, self ligating brackets, e.g., Damon)
  • Wedgewise
  • Lingual Technique (e.g., Incognito)
  • Removable & Functional Appliances (Herbst, Clark twin block, Magnets, etc.)
  • Clear Thermoplastic Retainers (e.g., Invisalign)
  • Temporary Anchorage Devices (TAD)

Patient Care

Each resident receives into his/her care approximately thirty transfer and forty new patients. Treatment is carried out mainly using a modified edgewise technique. Other techniques taught include the Tweed technique, the Straight Wire Appliance, Burstone technique, Ricketts technique, Lingual technique, Extra-Oral and orthopedic appliances, Invisalign and Incognito. Functional appliances as well as fixed appliances are incorporated in cases requiring two stage treatment. In addition to mixed dentition, early permanent dentition and adult orthodontic cases, other multi-disciplinary cases are treated. These include orthognathic surgical, periodontal, ortho-prosthodontic, TMJ and implantology cases.

Residents will conduct diagnostic data gathering under the supervision of a designated faculty member, who will also be responsible for overseeing the rendering of treatment. Progress will also be monitored and may include treatment modification. All stages of treatment are to be documented and presented to the faculty and students at scheduled clinical conferences. When treatment has been completed, outcome assessment is performed based on serial diagnostic records prepared by the resident and evaluated by the case instructor. Completed cases are to be evaluated using the ABO guidelines. Incoming residents will receive new as well as in treatment and recall patients that will be transferred to them from more senior residents.

The orthodontic treatment of ten new cases must be completed and fully documented for presentation by each resident. The cases include:

  • Mixed dentition cases
  • Permanent dentition cases
  • Cleft palate and disabled children
  • Adult cases requiring orthodontic treatment
  • Multi-disciplinary treatments:
  • Perio-orthodontic, Prosthetic-orthodontic, Orthognathic surgery treatments
