Oral Biology

Dental X-Ray

Oral Biology is an extremely diverse area, covering the structure, development, genetics, cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, and microbiology of oral tissues. Consequently, the Department of Oral Biology has two fundamental missions within the Tel Aviv University School of Dental Medicine: The first is to educate dental students in these disciplines and prepare them for the clinical studies.

Undergraduate Courses

  •   Oral Histology
  •   Oral Microbiology
  •   Oral Immunology
  •   Oral Biology and function
  •   Biomechanics
  •   Biological-clinical correlations seminar

In addition, the Department teaches oral histology and anatomy to dental hygiene students. The Department also offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs within School of Graduate Studies.

Research Activities

The second mission is to bridge the gap between these basic sciences and the clinical practice and research in Dentistry. The Department faculty interacts with members of all clinical departments and promotes biological research in their respective areas with the aim of understanding and improving all aspects of oral and craniofacial health and treatment.

Topics include:

  •   Bone regeneration (analysis of scaffolds, cells from different sources, animal models)
  •   Stem cell biology, differentiation and usage in skeletal, periodontal, cardiovascular and joint diseases
  •   Skeletal phenotype and pathophysiology of various metabolic and endocrine diseases
  •   Bone anabolic agents, their use and mechanisms of action
  •   Mechanisms of destruction of gingival tissues in periodontal disease
  •   Enamel matrix proteins (mechanisms of action and in vivo applications)
  •   Mechanotransduction in alveolar bone and gingival tissues
  •   Periopathogenic and cariogenic bacteria in oral diseases and in vivo patient risk assessment
  •   Anti-bacterial properties of dental materials
  •   Mechanical properties of dental materials, tooth contact points and oral tissues in health and repair

This wide range of research efforts stems from the tight interactions that the members of the Department have developed with dental and medical clinicians, such as periodontists, prosthodontists, endocrinologists, orthopedic surgeons, etc. as well as with the biomedical industry. In the same vein, members of the department host and guide many of the basic sciences projects of dentists undergoing specialization in Periodontics, Endodontics, Oral Surgery and Prosthodontics.
