Topics

Each student is required to complete a clinical or basic science research project as part of the requirements. Prior the end of the first year of study, each resident is required to have developed a basis for progressing towards a peer-reviewed publishable research project. This requires a thesis defense and supervision of qualified intra / extra- departmental faculty. The Master of Sciences (MSc) program is available as an option, but it is not required. Applicants who choose to pursue the MSc may need to complete additional study hours and pay extra fees.

Research projects can be undertaken in several different fields including Biomechanics, Clinical Orthodontics, Oral Biology, Anthropology, Behavioral Sciences, Periodontology, Endodontology, Oral Pathology & Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, Prosthetic & Operative Dentistry, Occlusion and others. When selecting an adjunct field, the topic should be related to orthodontics.

Research Project:

Each research project is supervised by at least two instructors. After preparing a literature review of the specific project as well as a consultation with a statistician, a protocol is compiled, and proper IRB approval is received a Preliminary Study is initiated. The sample size and range of the study will be decided once the results of the preliminary study are analyzed.

Residents must submit a proposal to the Department Scientific Committee for review and subsequent amendment or final approval. An Evaluation Panel, consisting of three nominated referees, is established to assess the project. Upon completion, the written thesis is presented to the panel for evaluation. After receiving approval from the Evaluation Panel, each resident is required to formally defend their thesis.

Ph.D. Program

The International Postgraduate Program can also lead to a Ph.D. & Postgraduate Program in Orthodontics. However, this track requires an additional 2 to 3 years of research and completion of courses, specified for this track
