Stage I: Conditional
|
-
Upon receipt of written approval by the M.D./Ph.D. committee and an acceptance interview, the student's candidacy will be submitted for approval to the Unit Committee for Research Students of the School of Graduate Studies and to the University Committee for Research Students. The Teaching Committee of the Faculty of Medicine will approve an interruption in his M.D. or D.M.D. studies for up to three years. After receiving this approval, the student is accepted as a first stage student with conditional status.
-
Up to 6 months after the entry date for the program, students must pass a qualification examination. The appointment of the qualification committee and the procedure of the qualification test are equivalent to the procedure for the “direct” Ph.D. program.
-
Three copies of the short study program must be submitted by the student no later than six months after starting the program.
-
A copy of the committee's conclusions, will be delivered to the Secretariat of the School, as well as to the M.D./Ph.D. program. After receiving approval by the Unit's Committee, recommendations will be transferred for final approval by the University Committee for Research Students.
-
In order to meet the intensive timetable required in the M.D./Ph.D. program, a delay of more than four months in submission of requirements will lead to termination of the scholarship until the end of this stage.
-
Students who have successfully passed the qualification examination (with a grade of at least 90) and met the terms of required courses, will pass to the second stage. This step is followed by an increase in the living stipend.
|
Stage II: The proposed research program
|
-
Up to 6 months after the Qualification Committee's approval to pass the first stage and not more than one year from the date of acceptance to the M.D./Ph.D. Program, the student will submit a detailed research proposal according to the required regulations for the doctorate. Also at this stage, a delay of more than 4 months in submitting the requirements leads to termination of the scholarship.
-
Immediately after submission of the research proposal, a Follow-Up Committee will be appointed, according to the regulations of the doctorate. Once the proposal is approved, the student is accepted into stage II. This transition is also accompanied by an increase of the living stipend.
-
If the Committee believes that the level of knowledge of the student, or the rate of his study progress, is not well-suited for the M.D./Ph.D. Program, this case will be brought up for discussion in the Ph.D. Unit Committee. On its recommendation, the student's admission in the M.D./Ph.D. Program will be discontinued.
|
Stage III: Submission of a progress report
|
-
One year after receiving approval to transition into stage II, the student will submit a progress report. Near the end of his doctoral dissertation, a summary report will be submitted. These reports are submitted to the Follow-Up Committee members for review and evaluation. The Follow-Up Committee members meet with the student and give their assessment on his ability to complete the experimental part of the research work on time. Their evaluation is submitted to the Secretariat of the Graduate School, and a copy is submitted to the Center of the M.D./Ph.D. Program.
-
The progress report must be approved by the Follow-Up Committee as a condition for the student's return to his clinical studies.
|
Return to clinical studies
|
-
Students will be given the choice to shorten their clinical studies to two years, or to return to complete the six-year program. Students who return to the six-year program will not benefit from the shortening of the clinical studies to two years. Due to the intensive work load associated with writing a thesis, efforts will be made to facilitate the selection of training clinical departments for the students.
-
Two outstanding M.D./Ph.D. students from each class, recommended by the M.D./Ph.D. Committee, will be able to choose one of the hospitals affiliated with Tel Aviv University for their clinical internship without participating in the lottery.
