Misliya Cave, Israel, is part of a complex of prehistoric caves along the western slopes of Mount Carmel.

In 2002, a hominin left hemi-maxilla (Misliya-1) with seven intact teeth and one broken incisor, was found at the site, together with thousands of flint flakes dated 250,000 to 160,000 years ago, during an era known as the Early Middle Paleolithic.

This fossil of a modern human, the oldest found outside of Africa, tells us that homo sapiens left Africa 60,000 years earlier than we once thought.

The paper on the Misliya maxilla reached the "2018 Altmeric Top 100" papers list, and was also listed as one of the six top human evolution discoveries of 2018 in the PLOS blog
