Master’s Thesis Guidelines
Purpose of the Thesis
The master's thesis is designed to provide students with:
- Experience in conducting research.
- Skills in analyzing and interpreting scientific literature.
- Proficiency in writing and summarizing medical research.
- An opportunity to demonstrate independent thinking and analytical ability in scientific research.
The scope of the thesis should reflect a one-year research period.
Submission Deadline
- Students must submit their thesis by the end of the second academic year.
- If a student is unable to meet this deadline, they must submit a formal request for an extension to the Student Committee. This request must include a letter of recommendation from the advisor, estimating the additional time required for completion.
- Extensions may be granted for up to one additional year, subject to tuition regulations.
- Students who do not request an extension will be reviewed by the Student Committee, which may decide to terminate their studies.
Thesis Submission Procedure
- The thesis must be submitted to the Student Committee for review.
- Students must submit their thesis via email to nizac@tauex.tau.ac.il and noacb@tauex.tau.ac.il.
- A printed copy is not required.
- The thesis may be written in Hebrew or English. If submitted in English, a language-edited version must be provided along with a Hebrew abstract and cover page.
- The thesis should not exceed 80 pages (A4 format, 1.5 line spacing, font size 12), including figures, tables, appendices, references, and abstracts.
- The thesis must be written in clear, scientific language.
Thesis Format
The thesis must follow the standardized format:
- Cover Page (Hebrew) – Placed at the front, formatted according to faculty guidelines.
- Table of Contents
- List of Abbreviations
- Abstract (Hebrew) – Up to two pages, structured into at least four paragraphs: research objectives, methods, results, and conclusions.
- Keywords – 5-10 relevant terms.
- Introduction – Presenting the research topic and literature review (up to 10 pages).
- Research Objectives – Clearly stated main and secondary objectives.
- Methods – Detailed description of materials, equipment, and methodology, following scientific publication standards.
- Results – Presented in text, tables, images, and graphs (avoiding redundancy).
- Discussion & Conclusions – Interpretation of findings without repetition of introduction or results.
- References – Formatted consistently, as per thesis proposal guidelines.
- Appendices (if applicable).
- Abstract (English) – Up to two pages.
- Cover Page (English) – Placed at the back, following the Hebrew cover page format.
Thesis Evaluation
- The advisor must submit an evaluation form, suggesting potential academic reviewers.
- The thesis will be reviewed by a faculty member at Tel Aviv University or another academic institution with expertise in the research field.
- If a grade of 95 or higher is given, the advisor must submit a justification letter.
- The reviewer must return the evaluation form within one month.
- The reviewer may request revisions, and the student must submit the revised version to the Graduate School Office.
Publication of the Thesis
- Students must obtain their advisor’s approval before publishing any results.
- Publications must acknowledge that the research was conducted as part of the master’s thesis at Tel Aviv University.
- For research involving human subjects or animal studies, publications must reference the relevant ethics committee approval.
- Results may not be shared with the media before undergoing peer review and acceptance in a scientific journal.
Oral Final Examination
- After receiving the thesis grade, students will be contacted to schedule an oral exam.
- The exam will be conducted with the student, advisor, and reviewer.
- The student will present their research in a 20-minute presentation.
- The committee will assess the student’s understanding and analytical skills.
- The final exam score will be recorded by the reviewer. The advisor does not participate in grading.
Appeals
- The final thesis grade cannot be appealed.
Final Submission & Graduation
- Graduating students must submit a digital copy of their thesis to the Graduate School Office for library archiving.
- A signed form from both the student and advisor, indicating approval or refusal of public access to the thesis, must be submitted alongside the digital copy.
