Anatomy and Biological Anthropology

The Department of Anatomy and Biological Anthropology aims to advance biological research based on the anatomy of the human body, using advanced methods

Research in the department covers several areas

Biological Anthropology
This area of research focuses on the physical and behavioral aspects of humans as reflected in their bones.

It includes several subfields: human evolution, the study of the origin and distribution of modern humans, biohistorical research (reconstructing the history of ancient populations through the study of human remains), diseases in ancient populations (paleopathology), forensic anthropology, genetic research of ancient populations through DNA extracted from ancient human remains, and evolutionary medicine - examining the relationship between environment and disease over long time scales.

Neuroanatomy
This area of research investigates the relationship between brain structure, brain function, and human behavior.

Neuroanatomy research covers, among other topics, individual differences in brain structure and function, brain connectivity in healthy individuals versus psychiatric patients, brain mechanisms of learning, brain plasticity, and rehabilitation following head injuries. The research is based on both mouse models and human studies using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Biology of Bones
This area of research investigates genetic, hormonal, and pharmaceutical mechanisms that affect bone health.

The research employs genetic methods, molecular biology, imaging, three-dimensional morphometry, biomechanics, and epidemiology. Topics of interest include the effects of the endocrine and endocannabinoid systems, the impact of inflammation on bone resorption, fracture healing, and pathologies such as osteoporosis and degenerative joint changes (arthritis).
