Biography

Professor Yehuda Lerman is a board certified physician in Occupational Medicine, with accreditation in Public Health and Health Administration. On October 1, 2017, Prof. Lerman was appointed as the Head of the School of Public Health at Tel Aviv University.

Prof. Lerman completed his MD studies with honors at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1977, and received his MPH in 1988.

Prof. Lerman served in the IDF for many years, including as the Director of the IDF’s Public Health Branch. Subsequently, Prof. Lerman worked for many years at Clalit Health Services, the largest HMO in Israel, where he served as the Director of the Center for Occupational Medicine until August 2017.

In addition, Prof. Lerman was a research fellow at the Environmental Health Laboratory, the Department of Community Medicine and Preventive Medicine, and the Department of Environmental Medicine and Public Health at the Mount Sinai Medical School in New York. As of 2018, Prof. Lerman holds an Adjuct Professor appointment to the Department of Environmental Medicine and Public Health at the Mount Sinai Medical School in New York. 

Prof. Lerman joined the Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University in 1987 and has been a Professor of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine since 2006. Within the School of Public Health, Prof. Lerman has served as the Curriculum Committee Chairperson, Department Head Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine Department, and Program Head for the Masters in Public Health program. Over the span of his career Prof. Lerman has advised many students in pursuit of graduate and doctoral degrees.

Prof. Yehuda Lerman is a member of several of national advisory councils in the field of preventive medicine and occupational medicine, is a member of Collegium Remazzini and has published over 160 articles on public health and occupational medicine.

Research Interests

  • Induced sputum noninvasively provides information on cellular and soluble material from airways. It has been successfully applied for assessing airway inflammation in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, producing reliable results comparable to biopsy and bronchoalveolar lavage. 
  • Induced sputum research to examine occupational diseases
  • Use of induced sputum in the field of prevention, early detection, and diagnosing different dust and metal-induced occupational lung diseases
  • How to differentiate occupational lung diseases from idiopathic interstitial diseases by shape size, distribution including nano-particles from an induced sputum sample, etc.
  • Qualitative analysis of chemical composition of induced sputum particles: correlation to the chemical elements spectrum in bronchoalveolar lavage lung cells
  • Biopsy: evaluate T cell subsets and Cytokines retrieved from induced sputum samples
  • Breath oxidation and oxidation stress as research tools of occupational lung diseases
  • Jewish Law as a research tool in the investigation of the history of occupational medicine
